Protests erupted in several Pakistani cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, and Lahore after police surrounded the residence of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. The police used tear gas and water cannons at Khan’s Zaman Park residence in Lahore after two non-bailable arrest warrants were issued for the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) chief. The warrants were issued after Khan failed to appear in court over cases linked to the Toshakhana reference, where he allegedly concealed the details of the gifts he received from the treasury. Khan’s supporters clashed with police, with dozens of people injured, although Khan has asked his supporters to remain peaceful. The clashes occurred during a time of heightened political tension between the PTI and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, the ruling party, with Khan accusing the government of trying to arrest him as part of a plan to finish cases against Nawaz Sharif. Khan has reportedly been named in 21 different FIRs in Pakistan, and faces arrest for threatening a woman judge.
