Imran Khan, Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has sought protective bail in the Toshakhana case following the suspension of the non-bailable arrest warrant for him by the Islamabad High Court. Khan had previously failed to attend hearings regarding the case in which it is alleged that he and others received luxury vehicles from the Toshakhana (gift depository) in 2008. The Lahore High Court directed Khan to appear before it on Friday, and ordered security to be provided to him. PTI’s Asad Umar claimed that Khan had survived an assassination attempt in November 2022 and that his life was under threat. PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry said that Khan would attend court to contest the arrest warrant and police action, and added that police had assured them of security during the hearing. Prior to the hearing, Chaudhry tweeted that PTI and police had agreed to resolve the matter of the police operation. Witnesses said that PTI supporters armed with batons and iron rods remained stationed outside Khan’s residence, and previous police attempts to arrest him had resulted in clashes with supporters.
