Tension is high in Lahore as police threaten to arrest former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Supporters of the party, plus those of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party, took to the streets in the capital and other cities to protest Khan’s possible arrest. He has refused to appear before authorities on corruption charges relating to concealment of foreign money, and has accused the authorities of a witch-hunt against him. The accusations against Khan have been trumped up by PML-N, who struck a deal with current Prime Minister Shahid Abbasi to support the newly selected Senate chairman, against Khan and also against the country’s judiciary. The moves are seen as a response to the anti-corruption investigations launched against Sharif.
