Militants conducting terror attacks in Pakistan have acquired weapons left behind in Afghanistan by US forces, according to a report by Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The report claims that such weapons have boosted the military capabilities of banned groups such as the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Baloch separatists. This influx of arms has caused an increase in violence in Pakistan over the past two years. When the US withdrew its forces from Afghanistan in 2021, it left around $7bn worth of military equipment behind including firearms, communications gear and even armoured vehicles. The Afghan Taliban seized much of the abandoned equipment during the chaotic withdrawal. Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, some American military equipment and weapons have emerged in Pakistan, where they have been used by armed groups fighting the government.
