The US does not share the views of former ambassador to Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad on Pakistan, according to US State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel. Speaking at a press briefing, Patel said that Khalilzad’s recent statement criticising Pakistan’s political, economic and security performance was made in a private capacity and did not represent US foreign policy. Patel also said that the administration of President Joe Biden did not share any of Khalilzad’s views on Pakistan, nor did he speak for the administration. During the same briefing, Patel was asked about the political situation in Pakistan and called for all sides to respect the rule of law and allow the country to democratically determine its own leadership.
A US State Department official clarifies that Khalilzad is not representing the Biden administration.
