The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued a notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for delaying provincial elections in Punjab until 8 October. The Court also demanded that the ECP and the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf guarantee that the elections are both peaceful and transparent. The notice was issued in response to a petition by the PTI party that challenged the postponement. The hearing was adjourned until Tuesday. During the hearing, Barrister Ali Zafar, the PTI counsel, argued that the ECP schedule went against the constitution. Last week, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb argued that the postponement was in Pakistan’s best interests.
