The Supreme Court of Pakistan has served a notice to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for delaying provincial elections in Punjab province until 8 October. During the hearing, the court ordered the government and the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party to guarantee that the election would be both peaceful and transparent. Meanwhile, an ECP decision to postpone Punjab elections was declared to be in the wider national interest by a minister. Earlier this year, the supreme court ordered the ECP to hold Punjab elections within 90 days and directed relevant authorities to provide funds and security. The ECP subsequently issued the schedule for elections on 8 March, but has since delayed elections until 8 October. During the hearing, the PTI counsel argued that the constitution must be followed and that the ECP had no authority to give a new polling date.
