PayPal has announced the launch of passkeys, a new way for users to log in to their accounts without typing a password. Instead, passkeys will use biometric authentication or a device unlock code to verify the user’s identity. The system is based on the FIDO authentication standard and is designed to be cross-platform compatible. The rollout will begin on the PayPal website, and users must be running Chrome on Android 9 or later to access the feature. Passkeys are currently relatively rare, with only 38 sites and services supporting them, according to a list compiled by 1Password. However, many password managers support syncing passkeys between devices, making them more convenient than traditional passwords. Despite the hype surrounding passwordless authentication, it is likely to remain a niche feature for some time, as many sites and services have yet to adopt it.
