Nine people are missing and presumed dead following a fire that occurred in a building that contained illegal short-term rentals in Old Montreal last week. The fire, which started early in the morning, resulted in one death and left three other people seriously injured. According to one individual whose friend went missing in the blaze, there are concerns that building safety regulations were not followed, particularly with regard to fire alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. There are increasing calls for the city of Montreal to do more to regulate the use of Airbnb accommodations, particularly in heritage buildings where safety standards may be less robust. Victims’ families are still waiting for more information about the disaster, with some expressing frustration over the lack of details thus far. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante has called on Airbnb to work more closely with her city to crack down on illegal short-term rental units. The victims of the fire were reportedly from Pakistan, China, France, and Canada.
