Google has suspended Pinduoduo, a popular e-commerce app in China, on its app store after malware was found in versions of the app from other sources. The suspension was due to “security concerns” and is being investigated. The app is often used to offer discounts if users team up to buy multiples of an item. The move comes amid rising tensions over Chinese-owned apps such as TikTok. Some US legislators have claimed that such apps may pose a threat to American national security or may be used to spy on US users. Google has warned users to uninstall any Pinduoduo app not downloaded from its own Play store. Google Play Protect enforcement will block installation attempts of identified malicious apps. It is unclear whether similar security concerns exist around the Pinduoduo app for Apple users – the app remained available for iOS download as of Tuesday.
