The funeral of Pakistani field hockey player, Shahiza Raza, has been held in Quetta, capital of the southwestern Baluchistan province. Raza was one of at least 67 people who died when a migrant boat, carrying 170 people from various countries and headed for Europe, broke apart in rough waters off Calabria. Raza was seeking a better life in Europe to obtain work in order to fund the treatment of her disabled three year-old son, who had suffered brain damage as a baby and was paralysed on one side of his body. Most Pakistanis only became aware of Raza after her death, when images of her donning the country’s colours and sporting accolades spread through social media. Women’s sports are not widely televised in Pakistan. Raza’s funeral was held after her body had been repatriated with the help of the Italian foreign ministry.
