Former Pakistan Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan has called on the public to join him in a historic rally at Minar-e-Pakistan on 19 March, as part of his continuing general election campaign. He criticised the government, saying a “gang of thieves” had been imposed on the country, and that it was necessary for the people to come out for “real independence” and “accountability of the thieves”. Khan’s rally took place despite attempts by Islamabad police to arrest him in relation to a threatening case involving a female judge. In a separate development, PTI supporters have filed a petition at the Supreme Court calling on the court to take action against ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shehbaz Sharif and others over their alleged involvement in money laundering. The case has already led to the arrest of the chief financial officer of the Sharif family’s Ramazan Sugar Mills.
