    Dehdradun-based Instruments Research & Development Establishment, one of the labs of DRDO, has designed and developed Stabilised Electro-Optical Sight (SEOS) – a two axis panoramic sight to attain surveillance capability at static and mobile conditions.

    It is designed in such a way that it can be used in different platforms and operational requirements.

    It comprises laser range finder, CCD camera, thermal imager and automatic video tracker.

    The Dehradun-based lab has developed two such systems, which can cover a radius of 40 km without sending any signals – a stealth type vision camera. This can be mounted on a tank, fast moving boat or a fighter aircraft.

    VEM Tech, a Hyderabad-based firm, has been outsourced to manufacture the systems for supply to the Defence Ministry.

    Big achievement

    Terming it as a big achievement, IRDE Scientist Ram Saran told The Hindu on Monday that full-fledged production of the system would be useful for Akash new generation and Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile System (QRSAM).

    He said while foreign vendors sell similar system for around Rs. 12 crore, under ‘Make in India’ programme, they could make it for about Rs.2 crore.

    *Indian DRDO develop have 2 way approach to develop such complex system
    1. Develop the system with imported components FPA/MWIR CCD
    =>The previous E/O Sensor tech tested in 2014, used imported MWIR 3rd generation 3-5 µm (640 x 512 FPA) thermal imager (TI) whose eye-safe laser range finder/ ELRF provides range of the target from 200 m to 9995 m with an accuracy of ± 5 m

    Such system have high resolution needed for Fire control radar in QRSAM/Quick range SAM

    The current system have probably 2 version of EO Sensors. 40 KM range probably uses imported LWIR FPA CCD panel which increase the range to 40 KM suitable for tracking/surveillance mode while MRSAM/Aksah SAM in terminal phase & QRSAM needs high resolution MWIR CCD panel for range up to 10 KM


    2. In the parallel process, DRDO have managed to develop/manufacture/test the 128 X 128 LWIC FPA & have moved on developing 384 X 384 MWIC FPA sensor--These E/O sensor will be used in NagII++ Local FPA+Local seeker( Nag I have 2 variants:Imported FPA+IIR seeker, Nag 1++:MMW seeker), Astra II++, Akash II++(Akash II, Astra II will have indigenous Ku band seeker).

    The local indigenous miniaturized CMOS sensor FPA are developed from - indium gallium arsenide , Mercury cadnium tellluride.
