No kidding: India police arrest goat for grazing in garden

RAIPUR: Police in central India arrested a goat and its owner for repeatedly damaging a senior bureaucrat’s garden, a local official said on Tuesday.

Police in Chhattisgarh state sprang into action on Monday, registering a case against the man and his animal for chewing up the district magistrate’s garden.

They were later released on bail but face initial charges of causing mischief and damage to property, said officer Ram Sewak Paikra from Janakpur town in Korea district.

“The goat and the owner were under police custody and are out, as both the sections 427 and 447 of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) are bailable offences,” Paikra told AFP.

He said the goat was allegedly a “repeat offender” in Janakpur town, some 340 kilometres north of state capital Raipur.

Local media were running video footage of the offending — and now tethered — black goat.

Rajesh Paikra, the official’s gardener, herded the captured goat to the local police station on Monday, demanding action.

“After the complaint, the owner of the goat, Abdul Hasan, was also arrested for the alleged crime,” the officer said.

“Since both the sections are bailable offences, Abdul Hasan filed a bond in the police station promising that the animal will not further damage the garden.”

Goat Arrested In India For Munching on Judge's Lawn

Goat arrested for feeding on judge’s lawn in India, owner faces up to two years in prison

Grass is not always greener on the other side -- the harsh reality dawned on Babli, a goat, when she found herself in "police custody" for grazing in nearby lawns.

Babli and her owner Abdul Hassan are now cooling their heels in a police station.

Babli was arrested on Tuesday morning for repeatedly entering the lawn of Hassan's neighbour, a judge by profession. Hassan, a small farmer, too was arrested. The arrest orders were given by Hassan's neighbour himself.

Miffed over repeated trespassing by the animal, the judge asked his peon to file a police complaint against Babli and Hassan to teach them a lesson.

According to the complaint Babli would often scale the boundary wall and eat up flowers and vegetables grown there.

Assistant Sub-Inspector, R. Srivastav, said the complainant had claimed that he had repeatedly warned Hassan but he did nothing to stop his goat.

"The goat's owner had been told several times by the judge's peon to not let the animal graze in their lawn. The goat would eat up all the plants. We received a written complaint from the peon on the basis of which we have registered a case. Investigation is on and the goat has been arrested," said Srivastav.

Babli has been charged under Section 427 (damaging and destroying other's property) and 447 (trespass) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and faces over two years in prison if proved guilty.

Meanwhile, a visibly hassled Hassan is still trying to come to terms with the turn of events.

"My goat has been brought to the police station," said Hassan. When asked about the fault of his goat he added, "My goat ate up the flowers and vegetables in the lawn of the magistrate."

Fates of Babli and Hassan hang in balance now. The owner has applied for bail in a local court for himself and his pet.

Not too long ago India had arrested a pigeon and charged it with spying for Pakistan.

    What next?

In criminal law for an offence to have occurred you need the mens rea and the actus rea. One is the action and one is the intention. How do you impute intention into a goat?
