Pakistan expels senior Bangladesh diplomat as 'spy' row escalates

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has asked Bangladesh to withdraw one of its diplomats from Islamabad, Dhaka said Wednesday, in an apparent retaliation after the expulsion of a Pakistani envoy who allegedly funded a suspected extremist on trial for espionage.

Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque said Islamabad had on Tuesday asked Dhaka to recall senior diplomat Moushumi Rahman from its high commission in Islamabad within 48 hours.

“The political counsellor and head of chancery in Islamabad has been given till Thursday to leave the country,” Haque told AFP.

The Bangladesh foreign secretary did not offer any reason for Pakistan's decision to expel Moushumi Rahman. Diplomatic sources in Islamabad told Dawn.com that Rahman indulged in 'anti-state activities in Pakistan' and that concerned security agencies continued to monitor her.

This is the first time that Pakistan has expelled a Bangladeshi diplomat.

On December 23, Islamabad had recalled one of its diplomats – Farina Arshad – from Bangladesh at Dhaka's request, after she was alleged to have financed a suspected extremist accused of spying for Pakistan.

A formal statement from Islamabad dismissed the charges as “baseless”, adding: “an incessant and orchestrated media campaign was launched against her on spurious charges”.

    Rocky bilateral relations
Pakistan and Bangladesh have had a rocky bilateral relationship in recent months.

Bilateral relations soured when Bangladesh executed senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-i-Islami’s secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid in November.

The two had been convicted of genocide and rape by a domestic ‘war crimes tribunal’ called International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), which had been set up under a 1973 legislation that was amended in 2009 to resume the trials.

The original 1973 legislation for the establishment of war crimes had been set aside by Hasina Wajid’s father and Bangladesh’s founding father Mujibur Rehman after a tripartite agreement signed in April 1974 for the repatriation of war prisoners. Rehman had then agreed that in the interest of regional peace, no one would be put on trial for alleged crimes committed during the 1971 war.

Bangladesh had felt offended when Pakistan reminded it of its founding father’s promise contained in the 1974 tripartite agreement under which Dhaka had agreed not to proceed against those whom it had accused of ‘war crimes’ during the 1971 war.

In response, Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Dhaka Shuja Alam was summoned by Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mijanur Rahman to receive a protest over a statement issued by Pakistani Foreign Office in which it regretted executions of the two Bengali leaders.

Bangladeshi diplomat, Maushumi Rahman, is leaving Islamabad to Lisbon on Thursday, as Pakistan has asked Dhaka to withdraw her in response of taking back its ‘terror-linked’ diplomat Fareena Arshad.

The second secretary (political), Fareena, was withdrawn on Dec 23, and Dhaka was prepared to take back its Political Counsellor Maushumi immediately as reciprocity takes place in diplomacy in this type of issue.

But Islamabad waited two weeks before asking Dhaka on Tuesday to take her back.

The state minister said the Bangladesh government was expecting Pakistan’s retaliation and had taken preparations to transfer Moushumi from Islamabad to Lisbon.

He told journalists on Wednesday that Islamabad could not cite any reason when it asked the Bangladesh High Commissioner to send back the Counsellor.

Get off your high horse and look in the mirror for a change. What do you have to say about the Soviets who used their embassy to spy for India and smuggle weapons for Mukti Bahini? Have you ever lectured them?

And what has this video to do with the topic? Are you trolling again or have you secretly fallen in love with Haseena or BD? Do you have any idea how you treat 20 million Bangladeshi migrants in India? Being a bangladeshi is a gaali there and you treat them like disease. So don't you worry bout some stupid tv mockery, its nothing compared to your hatred towards them.

Bangladeshi immigrants are living illegally in India--Most of them even managed to get voter id card and work in India with support of corrupt Indian parties who allowed them to stay back for vote bank politics
Irrespective of good relation India enjoys with bangladesh;we remember the fact that Bangladesh,PAk was created on basis of religion..

20 million is big big number..Lately most of the are muslims, jammat spporters. They have managed to change demographics of our north east state, west bengal--
Same situation prevailed in kashmir 500 yrs ago---And now you guys crib about majority muslim living in valley--

Name me 1 non muslim majority country in this world who will accept 20 million muslims of other country?? Pak isnt ready to take in few thousand beharis Pakistani muslim who live around camps in bangladesh!

..We have no problem with bangladesh people but no country can tolerate such large no of illegal migration

Bangladeshi illegal migrants are there because of your failure to stop them. Your love for them was temporary and died with the creation of the new nation because your objectives were met. They remain a plague to your country and they are teated accordingly.
We took more than five million Afghan refugees (despite being a smaller cuntry and economy than India) compared to half a million you took. So there's nothing to brag about.

KOLKATA: India’s most wanted, Dawood Kaskar Ibrahim, is the brain behind smuggling Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) from Bangladesh to West Bengal with the support of his mentors in Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The arrest of Bangladeshi national Mazrul Rahman on November 29 from Shobhapur in Malda district on the India-Bangladesh border with `18 lakh of FICN by the Border Security Force led to a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe. It learnt about his Bangladeshi bosses and informed Dhaka.

Bangladeshi sleuths arrested six men from near Dhaka airport and seized several crores of FICN. Among the arrested was Pakistani national Abdullah alias Salim. Interrogation revealed that their boss was Dawood Ibrahim, and that D-Company (as his gang is called) has a network in Malda and in some border districts of West Bengal.

Investigation revealed that Abdullah migrated to Karachi with his family in 1979 from Tarpurchandi in Chandpur in Bangladesh. He joined D-Company through Aslam Chaudhury alias Taimur, and kept in touch with the “manager of FICN smuggling” Subabhai alias Ershad.Abdullah revealed that during the last six years, the smuggling of thousands of crores of FICN to Malda from Chapai Nawabgunje in Bangladesh was controlled by Iqbal Kana alias Adis Iqbal alias Malikbhai of D-Company, a resident of Shalimar Gate in Lahore. Malikbhai vetted each recruit before engaging them in smuggling FICN from printing presses in Nepal to Bangladesh and then into West Bengal. There were several printing presses in Lahore and Karachi too, he said.

Five others who were nabbed said that Bengalis in Pakistan who did not have passports and wanted to return to Bangladesh were being recruited. D-Company arranged “out passes” for them through the Bangladesh High Commission in Pakistan. They carried trunk loads of FICN, which was allowed to pass through the green channel at Dhaka airport by D-Company and ISI officials.

The NIA was informed that a FICN “stock yard” existed in Shibgunje and Daulatpur in Malda, which is managed by Saddam Sheikh.

The modus operandi was to sell a lakh of FICN for Rs 40,000 to businessmen. Some Muslim journalists with links to Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen of Bangladesh—including a British national woman who worked for a paper owned by Sudipto Sen, chairman of Saradha Group tainted by the multi-crore chit fund scam and now in jail—is also being investigated by the NIA. So is her boyfriend, who was behind bars for 69 days for raping a woman; he frequently visited Bangladesh, Malaysia, Dubai and several Western countries. Both are considered to be Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen agents and are getting protection from some politicians in West Bengal. A a large number of foreign currency was recovered from the man, who managed to bribe the local police station and send it to Jamaat cadres in the city.

The profit from smuggling FICN is sent through Karmakar, a hawala operator in Malda, to D-Company’s agents in Kajipara, Mirpur, Gabtuli and Gulshan in Dhaka. The thousands of crores of rupees are then routed to Dawood in Karachi and Lahore.

The arrest of a Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen leader revealed that Farina Arshad, second secretary (political) of the Pakistan high commission in Dhaka, was also involved in smuggling FICN to India. A Pakistan High Commission staffer was caught meeting militants and was sent back to Pakistan.

NIA seizes fake money in hard-to-spot 'Karachi print'

Kolkata/Howrah: The arrest of a suspected fake currency courier, Prasenjit Sinha, by the NIA on Friday has again brought the focus on how the ISI-backed modules have been pumping fake currency into the country. The notes, all of Rs 500 denomination, seized from Sinha were of "Karachi print", which were made in Pakistan and could hardly be distinguished from original currency.
Sinha's arrest comes exactly a month after two Murshidabad residents, suspected to be working for ISI-backed modules and part of a fake currency racket, were picked up by the Ahmedabad police.
"The notes seized from Sinha show it is not printed in Bangladesh, which does not have the technology to print such high-quality currency," said an NIA officer. The consignment seized from Sinha has the face value of Rs 5.8 lakh.
According to an NIA officer, the currency entering India through Bangladesh can be categorized into two segments. While 'Bangladesh print' notes are good look-alikes, but it is easy to detect those. The difficult-to-spot ones are the 'Karachi print'. "The fake notes which can only be detected by RBI officials are the Karachi prints. They even fake the security threads," the officer said.
An investigation has revealed that Sinha, who is a courier, received the consignment from a place in Malda and was headed for Chennai when he was intercepted. "The currency was procured from Bangladesh, but the notes were not printed there," the officer said. Sinha, suspected not to have any other role than that of a courier, told investigators that they are not given details of receivers. He delivered packages to persons with "a special code and specific sign", an officer said, adding that for each consignment, Sinha was paid Rs 5,000. NIA officers, who are now tracing the currency source, said Sinha had made several trips to the Indo-Bangla border and he might have been to Bangladesh.
The two Murshidabad residents, Mofizul Sheikh and Shabuddin Sheikh, who were arrested from Ahmedabad last month had spilled the beans on three others, Babu Sheikh, Ashanuddin Sheikh and Aaftan Sheikh, residents of Ghansipur in Bengal. "They were part of the racket in Bangladesh and Pakistan. We are checking if Sinha was also part of that network," the officer said. Another officer pointed out Malda had been a transit route for fake currency into India, the most common point being Farakka. The gangs also functioned in places such as Kaliachak and Gajol.
