Re: Breaking News : Pakistan signs deal with Sri Lanka to sell 8 JF-17

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Pakistan and Sri Lanka have reached an agreement under which Colombo will buy JF-17 Thunder fighter jets from Islamabad.

The media reports said that in the initial phase, Pakistan will sell 8 JF-17 Thunder planes to Sri Lanka.

Earlier, the diplomatic sources revealed that India had threatened Sri Lanka not to buy JF-17 Thunders from Pakistan. The Indian government warned that if the Sri Lankan government would move forward with the proposed JF-17 Thunder deal, New Delhi will stop the loan of $400 million to be given to Colombo.

The JF-17 Thunder is a lightweight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC) and the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation (CAC) of China. The JF-17 can be used for aerial reconnaissance, ground attack and aircraft interception.

On December 30 last year, the Chairman PAC Air Marshal Javaid Ahmed informed the National Assembly Standing Committee on Defence Production that the complex had achieved a milestone in Pakistan’s aviation history by endogenously manufacturing 16 fighter jets (JF-17 Thunder) during 2015.

The Chairman PAC said that the production and manufacturing of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets would be enhanced to 20 per year from 2016.

It is pertinent to mention here that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is currently in Colombo on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka.

Earlier in the day, both Pakistan and Sri Lanka signed eight agreements and memorandum of understandings (MoUs) related to defense, security, anti-terrorism, trade and science and technology in Colombo.

Sharif also held talks with the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and agreed on reinvigorating ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka with focus on enhanced cooperation in trade, science and technology, defence production and tourism.

Pakistan to sell JF-17 Thunder aircraft to Lanka

Pakistan to sell eight combat JF-17 Thunder aircraft to Sri Lanka under an agreement signed during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s visit on Tuesday.
The multi-roll fighter aircraft is the joint production of Pakistan and China.

Defence officials accompanying the prime minister said that both countries signed eight agreements related to defence, security, anti-terrorism, trade and science and technology and Pakistan would provide eight JF-17 fighter jets to Sri Lanka at the first phase.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena were present at the ceremony of signing agreements.

Speaking on the occasion, Nawaz said that Pakistan was ready to give Sri Lanka the most favoured nation (MFN) status in trade. He said that there were vast opportunities for bilateral trade and its quantum should be taken to one billion dollars annually.

He said that Pakistan was cooperating with Sri Lanka in defence sector and the two countries would work together to choke financial assistance to terrorists. He said that Pakistan and Sri Lanka were intended to strengthen bilateral relations as they had unanimity of views on the international and regional issues. He said that his visit was reflective of close relationship between the two sides.

On this occasion, Sri Lankan President said that his country enjoys close relationship with Pakistan and Sri Lankan people acknowledged Pakistan’s role in promotion of bilateral ties between the two countries. He said that the leadership of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has created political stability in Pakistan.

Later, addressing a seminar on Pakistan-Sri Lanka relations at the Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies in Colombo, the prime minister urged all regional countries to enhance their literacy rate and overcome diseases, poverty and malnutrition. “We should also strengthen our bonds of trust for resolution of these problems,” he said.

He said that both the countries enjoy commonality of views on international issues and Sri Lanka was the first country entered into a free-trade agreement with Pakistan.

He called for greater parliamentary exchanges between the two countries to learn from each other’s experiences. He said that Pakistan desired to enhance its maritime relations with Sri Lanka and looking forward for increased engagements between the two countries and Pakistan would continue to provide training facilities to the armed forces of Sri Lanka.

About relations with India, the prime minister said that he would be remained committed to promoting peace and stability in the region. “The foreign secretaries of the two countries are meeting within the next few days to determine the modalities of the dialogue process,” he said.

He also said that Pakistan had consistently supported an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process and would continue to do so in future for the sake of regional peace. (Daily Times)

Sri Lanka Air Force today said they were unaware of an agreement signed with Pakistan to purchase eight JF-17 fighter jets.

When contacted by the Daily Mirror, Air Force Group Captain Chandima Alwis said they were not informed of the government’s decision to sign such an agreement.

“From the side of the Air Force Head Quarters, we have not decided as yet. I have not been informed of the matter. It may have been something which took place during government level discussions. I don’t have any information on the matter and cannot confirm it,” he said.

He said the Air Force was reviewing a number of more suitable aircrafts to be purchased and that the Pakistani JF-17 fighter jet was one such fighter jet that was being looked at. (Piyumi Fonseka and Darshana Sanjeewa)

Azerbaijan, Nigeria interested in JF-17 aircraft, other defence products:

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain has said that Azerbaijan and Nigeria are interested in purchasing Pakistani defence products, including the upgraded JF-17 fighter aircraft.

“Azerbaijan and Nigeria will soon become buyers of Pakistani products,” he said during a meeting with a delegation of Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) at the Presidency.

He said Nigeria had expressed its desire to buy Pakistani defence products, including JF-17 Thunder and Mashaq aircraft.

Referring to his recent visit to Azerbaijan, the president said he had discussed ways of enhancing cooperation between the two countries in different areas.

He said Azerbaijan did not allow foreign banks to operate unless they show $50 million as equity but at his request it had allowed the National Bank of Pakistan to function with $10 million of equity.

“Exporters should benefit from such developments in friendly countries,” he said.

Talking about the government’s economic policies, the president said the priority was to extend all possible facilities to business community. “Reduction of power tariff by Rs3 per unit for industrial sector is a part of this facilitation process,” he added.

The government has been in constant contact with the business community to address different issues in cooperation with them. “The country’s exports have witnessed increase consequent to the facilities extended by the government to the business community,” he said.

The Ministry of Commerce has approved a three-year policy framework after consultation with all stakeholders to promote business activities and bring an end to unemployment.

He said restoration of law and order was inevitable for stabilising economy and enhancing trade activities in the country, adding that measures were being taken to eradicate terrorism. He reiterated the government’s resolve to continue the Zarb-i-Azb military operation and uproot terrorism.

The president said the government was determined to end the energy crisis. “Construction of dams has been started and the government was taking full advantage of solar energy,” he said.

Urging the business community to enhance exports, the president said the government had signed free trade agreements with a number of countries and now the business community should benefit from all the agreements to boost exports.

“Recent 21 per cent increase in exports to the European Union is encouraging.”

Ok Well the point so desperately being made by Mohan and others of his ilk is that this is proof of no deal. However the group captain has answered the question himself.

“From the side of the Air Force Head Quarters, we have not decided as yet. I have not been informed of the matter. It may have been something which took place during government level discussions. I don’t have any information on the matter and cannot confirm it,”

As the Indian airforce has discovered sometimes the government makes decisions without input from the end user. Also sometimes even the defence minister in India isn't informed whats happening....
