In Monday’s earthquake, the death toll has increased to 250+ people. The disaster left the locals dead, injured and displaced while the local government remained in shock. In recent years, there has been a lot of talk on disaster preparedness since Pakistan faces floods annually. However little has been done to educated people during pre, post and when disaster struck.

Unfortunately, the government is ill-prepared for any disaster and the burden is always taken up by the armed forces. There are over 26 news channels in the country that robustly report minute by minute on the latest happenings. They have often exposed government incompetence on various fronts and have showed the true picture to the citizens. However, some of these media channels are fed huge sums of money by influential politicians and government stakeholders to hide their wrongdoings. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, a government owned organisation has further pressurised channels rather than regulate them. This has affected neutral and true news reporting.

The recent boom in social media in Pakistan has turned the minute by minute reporting into seconds. Citizens are now reporting themselves from the remotest of areas with even more accuracy and without any biases or censorship. Twitter has been leading the way in timely updates of yesterday’s earthquake. Some of the trending posts and tweets are published below.
