Monday, October 26, 2015, saw a major earthquake hit Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the disaster struck at 2:09 PM local time and was measured 8.1 on the Richter Scale. The epicentre of yesterday’s quake was only a few hundred kilometres away from the 2005 earthquake that was 7.6 magnitude, killing over 75,000 people and displacing around 3.5 million locals.

The Muzaffarabad earthquake in 2005 had an intermediate depth of 75 kilometres. However, yesterday’s disaster was further down to 210 kilometres. This limited widespread damage and fortunately, the nation did not see a repeat of helplessness that occurred ten years ago.

The recent reports received from National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) stated that approximately 1,620 people are injured, 228 killed and 2,520 houses damaged in the catastrophe.

These figures could have easily escalated if the depth of the earthquake was similar to this years quake in Nepal that had an intermediate depth of 8.2 kilometres.

Pakistan is situated in a highly seismically active region and is prone to quake disasters. Sadly, we have not learned any lessons in the last 40 odd years. More than 88,000 people in Pakistan have died in quakes with over one million people injured since 1971. The lack of law implementation in the country has seen no significant developments keeping in mind the disaster control management protocols. This is not just for quakes but also for other natural disasters such as floods.

Unfortunately, the government and its relevant body have failed to devise a mechanism that may reduce substantial damages. Lessons must be taken from Japan that has spread awareness and educated its masses to change their way of living by building quake-resistant structures. Destruction cannot be avoided but in an event of a calamity losses can be minimised by having a well-informed society following necessary protocols.

Buildings are below normal standard of practice. Give someone in charge a backhander and they will pass sub standard buildings to pass. To get buildings up to scratch - Pakistan has a long way to go.
