Indian Navy to Induct Advanced torpedo defense system

    http://www.asianage.com/india/new-sy...-torpedoes-471

The Vizag-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory has developed an advanced torpedo defence system, christened Maareech, to divert incoming underwater torpedoes fired by the enemy away from valuable targets. Maareech has completed all the trials and is set to be inducted into the Indian Navy. The NSTL is awaiting the visit of defence minister Manohar Parikkar to Vizag to officially launch and induct the system.
While submarines use decoys as anti-torpedo systems, the system has been developed for surface ship for the first time. After completing trials at various stages, the prototypes of Maareech were tested. The Navy has accepted the system and is ready for formal induction. The NSTL took almost eight years to develop the “complex system.”
“It’s for the first time that such a decoy system has been developed for surface ships. It’s also an advanced version of the regular decoys. It is ready to be officially inducted. The Navy has accepted the decoy system and it can place the orders for its ships now,” Mr V. Bhujanga Rao, DRDO director-general, naval systems and materials, said. Maareech, will be manufactured at, Bharat Electronics Ltd., Bengaluru

    2. System uses advanced decoys as anti-torpedo systems
    3. The system is capable of detecting, confusing, diverting and decoying the incoming torpedoes. The decoy helps in exhausting the energy of the torpedo by running the later through long and ineffective course and prevents them from homing in to the targeted platform with its advanced counter-measure capabilities.

(Acoustic homing)Anti torpedo system: "CONTRALTO®-V Torpedo" developed by DCNS(France) uses similar confusion and dilution strategy on decoys.

This system is Ineffective against Wake-following torpedoes which follow the "White Noise" of turbulent water found in surface ship. Torpedo Killing Torpedo are used as counter measure for wake following torpedoes

Air-Independent Propulsion For Last Two Scorpene Submarines Ready: DRDO

    September 24, 2015
India's Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) today claimed it has successfully developed the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, which gives conventionally-powered submarines longer endurance to stay underwater.
This was announced by the DRDO chief Dr.S.Christopher at the annual DRDO Awards function presided over by Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar and the chiefs of the Indian Navy and the Air Force. Dr.Christopher said the indigenously-developed AIP technology has been demonstrated on a land-based prototype. Talks are on with the French DCNS to examine the possibility of incorporating the AIP plug in the 5th and 6th Scorpene submarines being constructed at Mumbai's Mazagon Docks Limited under a technology transfer.
The technology demonstrator has been developed by the DRDO's Naval Material Research Laboratory (NMRL) at Ambernath in Maharashtra.
If the technology works, it'll rule out import of AIP plugs. AIP is being looked upon as a significant game changer in conventional diesel-electrical submarine operations. AIP-fitted submarines can stay underwater much longer than those without it.
Diesel-electrical submarines have the limitation of having to surface regularly to re-charge batteries. This makes these boats vulnerable to enemy attack.

Navy gets indigenous system to decoy under water attack on ships

Indian Navy has got a fully indigenous decoy system that can divert under-water torpedo attacks on ships and submarines. Developed by Vishakapatnam-based Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), two such systems are into production grade now. The Advanced Torpedo Defence System (ATDS), christened as Mareech was handed over by defence minister Manohar Parrikar to the Navy on Saturday. Mareech detects and locate the incoming torpedo and apply countermeasures to protect naval platform against attack. Two production grade MAAREECH systems have been developed even as their user evaluation trials have been completed on board two Indian Navy ships.
