SCIENCE EDUCATION: Pain, Pus & Poison: Pain - Search for Modern Medicine (13 March)

Modern medicine is all to often taken for granted, whether we are reaching for the paracetamol, or being 'numbed-up' prior to a having a tooth cavity filled, or expecting the doctor to prescribe antibiotics for a chest infection. Once upon a time, it was not like that.

The BBC made a 3 part documentary series about how our understanding of pain, infection and use of effective medicines changed over the centuries and led us to our current situation. It is a very engaging documentary series, and I will be posting them for the next three Friday.

BBC Pain, Pus and Poison: Pain, The Search for Modern Medicine Episode 1 (13 March 2015)

Michael Mosley - Pain is all in the brain. When we break a leg or pull a muscle, millions of nerve cells in our brains fire to release chemicals telling us it hurts. To fight the pain, our brains release their own natural painkillers. The problem is, these homemade medicines aren't enough. Herbs, willow bark and poppies were used by our ancestors for their painkilling powers. The scientific revolution really began with the isolation of morphine at the start of the 19th century -- and continued into the 20th century when scientists found a way to synthesise a stable form of a safe painkiller called aspirin, a drug that could be manufactured on an industrial scale.

Bro, no reading required. It's a well put together documentary film series.
