Explosion at petrol station in Barengapara, Meghalaya

TURA: An explosion took place in the compound of a petrol station at Barengapara border town on Sunday evening believed to have been triggered by militants but there were no casualties reported.

The incident took place just before 7:30 pm when the petrol pump was closing down. A strange device was thrown at the pumping machine and it landed on the ground triggering a loud explosion and sending the workers of the pump to flee for safety.

Police have not ruled out the use of either a petrol bomb or a hand grenade in the incident which occurred just a few hundred yards from the Dalu police station.

“We suspect it could be a petrol bomb thrown by someone since there is a strong odour of kerosene and petrol at the site of the blast but we are also looking into the possibility of the explosion being caused by a grenade. So far we have not found the pin or any part of the device,” West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh said over phone.

According to locals from the area, the sound of the blast that occurred could be heard over a long distance.

The petrol station belongs to a businessman from Tura.

However, no one could ascertain as to who and from where lobbed the explosive in view of darkness.

Police have deployed armed guards in the area and are planning to expand their search in the morning to seek out evidence as to what caused the explosion.

The hand of militants in the attack, particularly those from the GNLA have not been ruled out either.

The GNLA militants along with ULFA militants use the Dalu-Barengapara corridor to cross to and fro neighbouring Bangladesh where they have support bases.

    Sarpanch shot dead in Baramulla

Srinagar, Sept 10: Militants this evening shot dead a Sarpanch in North Kashmir district of Baramulla, two days after a Special Police Officer (SPO) was killed and an Army jawan injured in militant attack in the same district.

Police said that militants shot dead Sarpanch of Palhalan village Ghulam Mohammad Yatoo son of Abdul Karim Yatoo of Rawpore Palhalan as soon as he came out of the Masjid after offering evening prayers.

A police and an Army party rushed to the spot and 29 Rashtriya Rifles and Police have launched a joint operation in the area to trace out militants responsible for the killing.

The attack comes after Saturday's militant strike in Sopore where a Special Police Officer was killed and an Army man injured in village Brath Kalan by militants.

Both these security personnel had come home for leave and were targeted by two pistol borne militants in the outskirts of the village. Body of the SPO was thrown into an irrigational canal while Army personnel was found critically injured on the bank of it.

Police had launched a massive hunt in the area to trace out the militants responsible for the attack on two security force personnel but so far they have not succeeded in tracing them out.

This is the third strike in Baramulla in past two weeks by militants. Heavily armed group of around 16 militants with majority of them foreigners' targeted Rs 50 crore Flood Works and Conservation of Wullar lake project in Nigli near Sopore 15 days back. The workers of the project were threatened and asked to stop work on the project which Pakistan thinks is a violation of the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 between India and Pakistan.

Around 300 workers who were working on the project fled away following militant threats resulting in stopping of work on the prestigious project aimed at increasing the water level of the Wullar lake that is shrinking at an alarming rate. Security forces had launched massive operation to trace out the militants responsible for targeting the Wular lake project but so far no one among them was traced out.

ZUF-NSCN-IM clash leaves six dead and one injured in Manipur

At least two civilians and four cadres of NSCN-K and ZUF have been killed in a gun battle with the rival NSCN (IM).

The gun battle took place in the remote Haochong village, located about 68 Kms North of Nungba police station in Tamenglong district at about 2.30 am today, informed a source.

Cadres of NSCN-K and ZUF were camping together at Haochong when they were attacked suddenly by rival NSCN-IM cadres.

Two NSCN-K cadres and one cadre of ZUF were killed in the attack.

Moreover, two civilians–– one woman and a man from Haochong village and another rebel cadre were also killed.

It could not ascertained till the time of filing this report to which group the fourth slain cadre belonged.

However, another source informed that the gun battle did not involve NSCN-IM.

The battle was fought between the NSCN-K and ZUF cadres who were camping together, and the two civilians were killed by stray bullets.

Newmai News Network reports that at least six people, including two civilians and four Naga militants were killed and another six injured in a heavy shootout reportedly ignited after a brawl in the village of Houchong in Tamenlong district of Manipur in the wee hours of Thursday, police sources said in Imphal.

The heavy exchange of fire took place around 2.30 am among a group of NSCN-K and Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) militants inside a house in Houchong village when the unspecified number of heavily armed militants from both the Naga militant groups opened fire among themselves after a brawl, killing two civilians and another four militants, and injuring six others, the police source said.

Houchong village in Tamenglong district is about 10 kms from Noney.

The source further said the two civilians killed in the shootout included the owner of the house where the incident occurred and a neighbour. They have been identified as Nk Gakhujiba 70, the house owner and Meijiru 55.

It is said that about 40 militants from NSCN-K and ZUF have been camping and dawdling in the village of Houchong for the last few days.

The two deceased civilians have been identified as Merijiliu (55) and MK Kaikhujba (70). Both of them belonged to Haochong village.

Both of them were hit and killed by stray bullets when they were sleeping on their beds.

Of the four rebel cadres killed in the gun fight, one has been identified as Sgt Maj M Pao of NSCN-K.

Even as Tamenglong District Police have moved to the site of gun battle, they have not been providing any definite information.

In the meantime, many leaders of Zeliangrong frontal organisations have moved into the area.

Notably, two ZUF cadres were killed in another clash with NSCN-IM cadres at Nungba on May 30.

This was preceded by another attack on NSCN-IM by ZUF at a place between Taoshang and Leishok villages under Khoupum PS on October 9 last year in which five NSCN-IM cadres and a civilian driver were killed.

Factional clashes have been rocking Nagaland of late too, with at least four cadres belonging to two different rival factions of the NSCN killed in a clash at Zunheboto district on June 19.

Four persons killed in Manipur bomb blasts

IMPHAL, Sep 28 : At least two Assam Rifles perso-nnel and a civilian have been killed while five other AR personnel and two civilians sustained injuries in a seris bomb blasts triggered by suspected MPA cadres of the UNLF at Kwatha village, Chandel district near the Indo-Myanmar border.

The bombs, totalling seven and planted 20 feet apart exploded in series at around 1.15 pm today killing the two AR personnel and one villager.

Meanwhile, a press release issued by the PRO, Hqs IG AR (South) said that the CorCom was behind the IED blasts at Kwatha Khunou and said four AR men were hurt.

The injured were eva-cuated by Assam Rifles to a hospital at Imphal.

Two AR personnel identified as Rifleman Ja-gendra Kaushik from Utta- rakhand and Rifleman Kewal Singh from Rajas-than succumbed to injuries and four other jawans were also injured.

The bombs were planted at Kwatha Khunou Lam-khai on the road leading to Kwatha village at a spot about 4 Kms away from NH 2. A team of 24 Assam Rifles posted at Kwatha village was passing by the road when the bombs exploded suddenly with a loud bang.

One civilian was immediately killed on the spot while six AR personnel sustained injuries.

The deceased civilian was one Ningthoujam Sa-najao (36) of Kwatha Khunou.

The injured were airlifted by helicopter to Red Shield hospital at Leimakhong. But two AR personnel succumbed to the injuries.

The two injured civilians have been identified as Angom (O) Kaboklei (45) w/o Ito of Kwatha Khunou and Angom (O) Ritu alias Akoi (30) w/o Tomaljao of Kwatha Khunou.

After the blast, the AR team took position and opened fire. As such, it cannot be confirmed yet whether the civilians were injured due to the bomb blast or due to firing by AR troops.

It is reported that a police team led by the Moreh SDPO have moved in to the blast site.

Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles condemned the ‘barbaric action’ carried out by CorCom whose cadres instead of directly facing the security forces preferred to target civilians and Assam Rifles in cowardly manner. The bomb attack showed the frustration among insurgent groups who are frustrated because of large number of their cadres deserting their camps and surrendering to the security force. The recent surrender ceremony at Hqs IG AR (South) and peace initiative by various groups with security forces bear testimony to the fact that many UGs/groups have shown their faith in the security forces and State Government and trust them to resolve all issued peacefully.

Assam Rifles would not be deterred by such violent and nefarious actions of the UGs and would continue to encourage misguided youths to join the mainstream.

AR also appealed to all UG groups and their cadres to come forward willingly for peace talks.

Maoists kill two persons and abduct three others in Bihar

An elected rural representative and his son were shot dead by Maoists in Bihar's Vaishali district, police said Saturday.

The armed Maoists late Friday night killed Umesh Singh and his son Kunal Bharti in Suki village, about 65 km from here, Superintendent of Police Upendra Kumar Sinha said.

According to police, Maoist guerrillas stormed into Singh's house and dragged him and his son out. "They first chopped off Singh's hands and legs and shot him and his son dead," a police official said.

Tension prevailed in neighbouring villages Saturday as local residents protested and blamed police inaction for the incident. Heavy security forces have been deployed and search operations are on, added Sinha.

    Three persons killed in Manipur

Jaikalung (42), was killed in crossfire between a combined force of suspected Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang (NSCN-K) on one side and NSCN-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) cadres on the other at Tamenglong District headquarters at around 1.45 pm on October 2. Jaikalung (42) was killed while he was trying to herd the children playing at Model Village School ground to safety when the firing began.

Meanwhile, in another incident, a Police source claimed that a suspected militant cadre identified as one Thiyam Romenkumar alias Rome was killed during a ‘shoot-out’ with Imphal West commandos at Lamdeng Khunou Makha Leikai under Lamsang Police station in Imphal West District at about 5.45 am on October 2. One .9 mm pistol and two hand grenades were reportedly recovered from the encounter site. One of the hand grenades did not have a lever and it was hurled towards the commandos though it failed to explode. However, the family members of Rome alleged that he was picked up from home and was killed in a fake encounter.

Further, another suspected militant, identified as Sapam Ranjan, was slain in another reported encounter with Imphal West commandos at Takyel Khongbal, SAI road on October 1. He had reportedly joined Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL) but came back home about a week ago.

Maoist blast kills four police in India

PATNA: A landmine attack by Maoist rebels in eastern India killed four policemen on Thursday in a strike that targeted a convoy heading out on patrol before dawn.

The blast in a forest area of Bihar state came following a lull in attacks on policemen since six officers were shot in May in an ambush in Chhattisgarh state.

The Maoists have been fighting a deadly low-intensity war against authorities for decades for what they say are the rights of tribal people and landless farmers.

“Four CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) were killed when their vehicle was blasted by an IED (improvised explosive device) set by Maoists in a forested part of Gaya district,” senior officer M.K. Sinha told AFP by telephone.

Sinha said that three men died on the spot and one later succumbed to his injuries.

“Four who were seriously injured are now being taken to hospital in Patna city and two others with minor injuries were admitted to a local hospital,” he said.

The insurgency, which began in 1967, feeds off land disputes, police brutality and corruption, and is strongest in the poorest and most deprived areas of India, many of which are rich in natural resources.

Seven policemen hurt in ambush by insurgents in Manipur

Seven policemen escorting a senior police official were injured when insurgents detonated a powerful bomb leading to an hour-long exchange of fire in Manipur's Chandel hill district bordering Myanmar today, official sources said.

The unidentified insurgents detonated the bomb at Khudengtabi area, about 100 km from here, at 2:00 PM when the policemen were escorting district superintendent of police E Priyo Kumar after he was returning from a meeting with Myanmar officials at the border town of Tamu, the sources said.

The SP was unhurt, but the policemen were injured by bomb splinters, they said.

This led to a heavy exchange of fire between the policemen and insurgents for almost an hour, they said.

It was not known if there was any casualty on the side of the insurgents.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast. A combing operation was launched in the surrounding hill areas.

Last Saturday, insurgents had exploded seven bombs at the Kwatha Khunou area near Khudengtabai in which two Assam Rifles jawans and a civilian were killed.

Hazaribagh: Three kids killed as BSF mortar misfires

Ranchi: Three children were killed on Monday morning when a Border Security Forces (BSF) mortar weapon misfired in Lalpur village in Hazaribagh.

The three kids had gone to the nearby Bahranpur forests where they found and brought the mortars with them. Later, the kids began playing with the mortars and they burst resulting in the deaths.
