The death toll has increased to 15. This is all coming from Eastern Afghanistan, Pakistan must not further aggravate the situation there. If that calls for the end of rockets into Eastern Afghanistan, so be it. There needs to be a better strategy that ensures nothing is stirred from Eastern Afghanistan into Western Afghanistan.

    RIP to the dead.

Blasts near Karachi shopping mall, six killed

KARACHI: At least six people including a child were killed Tuesday when two bombs exploded in succession near a shopping mall in Karachi’s busy commercial area of Hyderi, DawnNews reported.

Police and hospital officials confirmed the death toll as six. More than 15 others have been wounded.

The bombs went off in quick succession in the usually crowded Hyderi Market near the Dolmen shopping mall during the evening rush hour, police officer Azam Khan said.

One bomb exploded in a dustbin and three minutes later another went off at the main parking lot in which about a dozen vehicles were damaged, he said.

“We suspect the bomb was planted in a car or a motorbike parked in the area. Casualties were caused by the second blast,” he added, confirming that at least six people were killed including a nine-year-old child.

The powerful blasts were heard several kilometres away, residents said. The casualties were taken to the local Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Bomb blast kills nine in Peshawar, TTP claim responsibility

PESHAWAR: A bomb targeting a Pakistan air force vehicle ripped through a van in the northwestern city of Peshawar on Wednesday, killing nine people, officials said.

Glass, metal and pieces of human flesh littered the ground near a market on the city’s Kohat road, near the Scheme Chowk area, after the explosion, which investigators said was likely to have been detonated remotely.

“At least nine people have been killed in the blast and 34 others wounded,” senior administration official Javed Marwat told AFP.

The injured were shifted to Lady Reading Hospital.

Shafqat Malik, a senior official with the bomb disposal squad said the blast hit the van as it approached a parked car and appeared to have been targeting a Pakistan Air Force van which was also damaged in the explosion.

“Apparently the bomb was planted in a car parked on the roadside and it contained 30 to 40 kilogrammes of explosives, including artillery shells and ball bearings,” Malik said.

    TTP claim responsibility for attack

The TTP spokesman for Tariq Afridi group of Dara Adamkhel Taliban, Muhammad has accepted responsibility for the Kohat Road blast.

Muhammad in a telephone call to media said ” We accept responsibility for the blast on Kohat road its a reaction to the killing of Mualana Naseeb Khan and the PAF jet strikes on a Madrassa in Orakzai Agency.”

He said that they were planning more attacks and would also target law enforcement agencies.

Bomb kills one soldier, injures 15 in North Waziristan

MIRANSHAH: A roadside bomb targeting a military convoy Wednesday killed a soldier and wounded 15 others in North Waziristan, Officials said.

The bomb was planted along the route of a convoy of the paramilitary Frontier Corps in Spinwam area about 40 kilometres north of Miranshah, the main town in the North Waziristan region, they said.

The injured were shifted to the Combined Military Hospital (CMH).

The vehicle was partially damaged by the bomb attack.

“It was a remote controlled device and the target was a military convoy,” a security official in Miranshah said.

One vehicle in the 20-truck convoy was hit in the blast, which killed one soldier and wounded 15 other troops, he said.

Troops responded by launching a house-to-house search for militants while military helicopters shelled suspected hideouts, another official in the northwestern city of Peshawar said, confirming the casualties.

North Waziristan, one of seven districts in Pakistan’s semi-autonomous tribal belt, has become the most notorious Taliban and al Qaeda stronghold on Pakistan’s border with Afghanistan.

Islamabad has resisted US pressure to launch a full-scale offensive against insurgents in the area.

Attacks on the military are rare in the region as an influential local militant commander, Gul Bahadur, agreed not to attack Pakistani troops under a ceasefire accord signed with the authorities in 2007.

Peshawar blast kills top Pakistan bomb disposal officer

A senior Pakistani bomb disposal officer has been killed while attempting to defuse a device in the restive north-western city of Peshawar, police have said.

Bomb squad veteran Hukam Khan had successfully defused one device but was killed when a second one exploded as he was trying make it safe.

Three police officers were wounded in the blast.

Mr Khan saved many lives by defusing dozens of bombs in his career.

Police say that Mr Khan, who was in his late 50s, rushed to the city's Matni neighbourhood after hearing that insurgents had planted two bombs near a road used by security convoys travelling to the Khyber tribal region.

Senior police officer Fazal Mola Dad told the AP news agency that Mr Khan's role in making so many bombs safe in recent years meant that he played a key role in the battle against militants in Peshawar.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday told the UN General Assembly that his country had lost more than 7,000 soldiers and policemen as a result of "terrorism" since the 9/11 attacks in the US. He said that in addition 37,000 civilians had been killed.

Peshawar is near Pakistan's tribal belt - a stronghold of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants. Violence from the tribal regions has in recent years spilled over into the city.

Last week a bomb exploded on a busy road in the city, killing at least nine people and wounding at least 20 others.

Earlier in September, a suicide bomber killed two people and injured 19 others when he drove his car into a vehicle from the US consulate in Peshawar.

Hundreds have died in attacks in and around the city in recent years.
