US drones strikes prompt Pakistan to strengthen ties with Russia

    Jared DeLuna

As anti-American sentiment grows in Pakistan, one retired Pakistani General believes it is time for Pakistan and Russia to build stronger ties. With the war in Afghanistan spilling into Pakistan, Brigadier Nadir Mir believes America needs to stop overstepping its bounds. The recent drone attacks in Pakistan have put a strain on the very fragile relationship between the two countries.
“The Drone strikes are not only an attack on land but also on Pakistan’s sovereignty. They lead to extremism and radicalism, as many innocent people get killed or injured. Pakistan has regularly warned the USA to end Drone strikes. The attacks have resulted in increasing Anti-Americanism. The strikes are counterproductive, they help produce more militants then they kill.” Brigadier Nadir Mir told The Voice of Russia.

However, the general also believes that America and Pakistan can rekindle their ties, if only to a certain extent. He states that bringing peace to Afghanistan is in a great interest for both countries.

“Pakistan and America can rekindle their ties to an extent; the strain in ties is due to US War in Afghanistan spilling over into Pakistan. Efforts should be made for negotiated peace in Afghanistan, a stable but unoccupied Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan, USA, Russia, China and everybody else.” He added.

Will making a pact with Russia be fruitful for Pakistan? Brigadier Nadir Mir certainly thinks so. “Russia and Pakistan can help create consensus in the entire Central Asian – West Asian regions for peace and Geo-economic bonding.”

Pakistan clearly is looking to become a major economic player in the world as it aims to bring in support from China and other neighboring countries.

China has already spent hundreds of millions in developing Pakistan, creating new trade routes into their own country as well as spreading their own influence.

According to Brigadier Nadir Mir, Russia is the obvious step in creating a new world power for Pakistan. “By joining a pact with Pakistan, Russia and China can establish an economic power house.”

Brigadier Nadir Mir also states “Pakistan is located at the crossroads of empires. Geo-economically it is a ‘Bridge State’ between multi regions, geo-strategically; it is the ‘Interposing State’.”

According to Brigadier Nadir Mir, America’s war is not the only reason for Pakistan seeking stronger ties with Russia. The fact of the matter is, America is an ocean away, and Russia is logically a powerful neighbor that they wish to embrace.

“For decades Pakistan has been an American ally which is oceans away, Russia is much closer. Moscow and Islamabad need to build a stronger relationship.” He added.

No matter how we look at this, America seems to be losing its influence around the world. As China and Russia pick up the pieces, America will be trying hard to rekindle any ties it had with Pakistan as well as other countries in the Middle East and South Asia.

    Pakistan Russia relations

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and Russia have decided to enter into new phase of defence cooperation as Chief of the Air Staff (CAS) Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt has concluded his trip to Russia where he visited various air force related defence installations and had meetings with defence high-ups, including his Russian counterpart.

It was the first-ever visit of any chief of Pakistan Air Force to that country. Air Chief Marshal Butt who has returned to the Air Headquarters has termed the visit a great success. In a brief chat with The News, Air Chief Marshal Tahir Rafiq Butt on Tuesday said ‘it was excellent visit with positive outcome and we can expect greater cooperation with Russia in the field of defence, particularly in air defence.’ Without going into details, he said that Russian authorities are forthcoming and they have agreed for further interaction between the two countries on the question of defence cooperation.

Pakistan is already using Russian made helicopters but the relationship is required to be diversified and expanded. The Russian choppers are providing useful service, he said. He said that Pakistan is interested in acquiring Russian machinery and equipment but it must be done under a streamlined system. The CAS stayed in Russian capital Moscow for four days and he will submit report pertaining to the trip to Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.

SCO is a reality, all those who think they can make a nuetral block in the coming NATO-SCO conflict are dreaming.

Let's hope all the best for the future though.

Diplomatic ties: Pakistan, Russia agree on a ‘comprehensive partnership’

    ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan and Russia agreed on Thursday to promote a ‘comprehensive partnership’ after talks between senior officials from the two countries.

The meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Consultative Group on Strategic Stability was part of the efforts by the two countries to increase cooperation on key regional and international issues.

Pakistan was represented by Additional Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry while Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey A. Ryabkov, led the Russian delegation.

“The talks were held in a cordial and friendly atmosphere,” said a statement issued by the foreign minister.

The statement added that the countries reviewed developments in the area of international arms control, disarmament and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) non-proliferation.

Both sides also discussed issues related to the maintenance of regional and strategic stability as well as relevant areas of cooperation in the bilateral and multilateral domain.

Pakistan and Russia decided to promote a comprehensive partnership.

Islamabad and Moscow remained bitter enemies in the 1980s when Pakistan along with other western countries backed the so-called holy worriors or mujahedin fighting Soviet troops in Afghanistan.

However, in recent years the two countries have made attempts to move beyond the cold-war era and develop a new partnership.

Russia wants to increase trade, commercial ties with Pakistan

Russia wants to increase trade, commercial ties with Pakistan

    Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: Russia considers Pakistan an important country of the region as it has great economic potential and wanted to increase bilateral trade and cooperation with Pakistan in diversified areas of economic activity.

Strong bilateral trade and larger cooperation between Pakistan and Russia would bring prosperity and integrity to the region.

Yury M Kozlov Trade Representative of the Russian Federation in Pakistan at Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) said, “Russia eyes Pakistan as a significant market and many Russian investors are taking interest to explore Pakistan for joint ventures and investment”.

He said previously Russia participated in some big projects in Pakistan including Pakistan Steel Mills and now there was a renewed interest to enhance trade and economic ties with Pakistan in multiple areas.

Kozlov said negotiations are in process with Pakistan for energy projects and cooperation in science and technology. He said a Russian company has already offered $1 billion financial and technical assistance for rehabilitation and upgradation of Pakistan Steel Mills. He said Russia was also ready to implement 500-600 megawatts coal-fired thermal power projects near Muzaffargarh and Jamshoro and also to modernise and convert some other power projects in Pakistan to coal.

He briefed the local businessmen about the upcoming trade exhibitions in Russia and invited them to participate in these exhibitions for exploring new areas of business cooperation.

Zafar Bakhtawari President Islamabad Chamber said Pakistan was now focusing on Central Asia for trade and exports and developing strong economic relations with Russia was vital for tapping huge markets of this region.

He said Pakistan was occupying a key economic location in the region and Russia should provide support to Pakistan to get the membership of Shanghai Cooperation organisation.

He said the bilateral trade of $542 million between the two countries was far less as Pakistan and Russia has the potential to take bilateral trade up to $4 billion for which serous efforts are required to be made by both sides.

He said many Pakistani products including food, fruits and vegetables, livestock, leather products, surgical equipment and sports goods have the potential to meet Russian consumers’ needs and private sectors of both countries should be facilitated for direct contacts to tap all untapped areas of mutual cooperation.

He stressed for direct air flights between Islamabad and Moscow and soft visa policy for promoting trade up to potential.

Russia is the third largest textile importing country of the world importing textile products of $20 billion annually and Russian textile importers should avail quality textile products of Pakistan, which are very competitive and affordable. a
He said the government in Pakistan was determined to undertake big infrastructure development projects including roads and railway network and invited Russian investors to take active part in these projects.

Pakistan and Russia share many similar interests in the region, and are faced by similar kinds of challenges and security threats as well. This is a great move by both countries,

Can you be more specific ? What are these "similar kinds of challenges and security threats" you speak of --- Indeed, if countries do not trade, no amount of "friendship" between Parliamentarians will further relations -- Russia faces threats from Islamists, Pakistan produces, trains and shelters Islamists - seems to me that there must be more to relations than sharing a bias against the West.

Muse YOU HAVE TO BE well aware of global politics before entering into any discussion , well Russia is also facing similar problems in Ukraine as it was pro Russian earlier and due to some external pressure involvement Ukraine is against Russia now, and also Russia and Pakistan also have same threats and enemies also , as none of the terrorist in Pakistan are Islamist, coz Islam is very Peace loving Religion under which other Religions also Prosper and grow like it did in Subcontinent for more than 1000 years. these all terrorist and militants are foreign funded.

What does Pakistan have to do with the militants in Chechnya and Dagestan? Yes, there are some safe breeding grounds for militants in Pakistan, but most of the Chechen fighters that have come to Pakistan are not "created" by Pakistan, they only get refuge there. Russia has its own problem with homegrown insurgencies, which is similar to Pakistan as well.

Keep telling that to yourself and someday, at least you wiil believe it, because no one else is willing to dismiss their experience . to safe guard the lie of Islam, the religion of Beace. Terrorists and militants "foreign funded"? So if the money comes from Saudi Arabia, it's no longer "Islamic"?? Pakistan needs more people willing to be honest about what ails Pakistan, perhaps one day, you may decide to join their ranks instead of mouthing the propaganda that the terrorists and militants find sustaining.

Thank you for acknowledging that Pakistan continues to breed, train and shelter international Islamist terrorism. I look to you to be honest with yourself and forum readers, the truth is painful but that pain is diminished and hope created when people such as yourself commit to being truthful instead of being chained to an evil ideology.
