Egypt imposes state of emergency in Sinai after attacks

Egypt has declared a three-month state of emergency in parts of the Sinai Peninsula after at least 31 soldiers were killed in two attacks there.

President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has declared three days of mourning in the wake of the suspected jihadist attacks.

Egypt's Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip was also closed, state TV said.

It was the biggest loss of life in decades for Egypt's army, which has been carrying out an offensive against jihadists in northern Sinai.

The area has become increasingly lawless since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011. Militants have stepped up attacks since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the army last year.

    Egypt in mourning

There has been no claim of responsibility for Friday's suicide blast at an army checkpoint that killed 28 soldiers.

At least 28 others were injured in the attack near El Arish, the main town in the north of the restive peninsula.

Three more soldiers died in a separate shooting at a checkpoint in the town itself.

A state of emergency was declared in the north and centre of the peninsula in the wake of the attack, starting from 03:00 GMT on Saturday, a presidential statement said.

The decision was made after Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi called a meeting of the National Defence Council to discuss the security situation.

"The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region... and protect the lives of citizens," the statement said.

Egypt is in mourning with state television carrying black ribbons on screen, after the latest heavy losses in the lawless Sinai peninsula, says the BBC's Orla Guerin in Cairo.

Communications have been cut, and helicopters and special forces are now searching for militant hideouts, she adds.

Security forces have been carrying out an offensive in northern Sinai, killing and capturing dozens of suspected members of jihadist groups.

In September at least 11 policemen were killed in a bomb attack on a convoy in the peninsula as it travelled through the village of Wefaq, near the Gaza border.

That bombing was claimed by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, the most active militant group in Egypt. It attempted to kill the interior minister in Cairo in 2013 in a car bomb attack and has issued videos of the beheading of captives.

The group professes backing for Islamic State (IS) group jihadists in Iraq and Syria, although it has not formally pledged its support.

This is why we need a seaport. Every time their own people attack them they try deflecting blame elsewhere. So of course, half of them blame the MB. The other half blame the besieged people in Gaza. Because Egyptians aren't all the most educated people. And they close the border to try make us hurt over it. As if we have anything to do with their business.

They can't accept the truth that it is own their people that feel abandoned and attacked.
There are also accusations of so alleged militants in Sinai having links with ISIS. Is that true?

President Sisi says jihadists threaten Egypt's existence

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi says the country is facing a threat to its existence from jihadists after the military suffered the biggest loss of life in decades in attacks in Sinai.

At least 31 soldiers were killed in two attacks on Friday, the deadliest a bomb blast near the town of El-Arish.

A three-month state of emergency has been declared in parts of the Sinai Peninsula and Egypt's Rafah crossing into the Gaza Strip was closed.

There will be three days of mourning.

In a live TV address, Mr Sisi said a huge plot was being waged against Egypt "by external forces".

"This is meant to break up Egypt and the Egyptians .... Egypt is fighting a war of existence."

No group has said it carried out the attacks, which came as the army continued an offensive against jihadists in northern Sinai.

The area has become increasingly lawless since President Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in 2011.

Militants have stepped up attacks since Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was ousted by the army last year amid massive opposition protests.

In the deadliest attack, 28 soldiers were killed and a similar number injured in a suicide bomb blast at a checkpoint near El-Arish, the main town in the north of the restive peninsula.

Three more soldiers died in a separate shooting at a checkpoint in the town itself.

What does 'links' even mean? And what it would it translate to? Should we treat the Sinai population like animals because any of them sympathize with IS as they see the message appealing as they are suffering at the hands of the army? I don't why you always see through this pathetic IS/AQ perspective. The people are Egyptian and the problems were here for a long time.

Libyans are still saying they died in Benghazi and that this incident was a coverup.

Most Egyptian media has already blamed Hamas and Gaza.

They want to dismantle the cities/towns starting from Al-Arish to the Gaza border and relocate those populations. For specific purpose of making sure no weapons can be sent to Gaza to protect their people from the upcoming Israel genocidal campaign which occurs every two years or less.

So are you admitting that they sympathize with ISIS?

Even if they are suffering at the hands of the Army, does it give them the right to sympathize with ISIS, who are coldblooded murderers that have got nothing to do with Islam or Muslims?

I don't why you always see through this pathetic IS/AQ perspective. The people are Egyptian and the problems were here for a long time.
    See above answer.

Most Egyptian media has already blamed Hamas and Gaza.
The Egyptian regime (Sissi and others) clearly believe Hamas/Gaza/Mount Sinai people have links to these IS/AQ militants (not saying I believe them, or that what they are saying is true). But when you say that some of them sympathize with IS, maybe that's why the Egyptian (Sissi) regime feels wary of them?

You ******* moron idiot, you are so low and have no respect for yourself. The dispute in Sinai has zero to do with IS. It has been going on for a while between government and tribes. You are so low that you try attaching IS to any people who differ with dictatorial governments in the region. I know this region way better than you low ass does.

And like I said in the beginning, this is the whole purpose behind this false flag:

Yes, when did I deny that? But they have been operating actively in the Sinai.

And I don't suspect them, I suspect the people who have it in their interests to inflame between Egyptians and the Palestinians. And they are the Israeli's.

It is possible, I never denied that; but when you say some people in the Sinai have sympathies with ISIS, then one wonders.

I was only giving you the point of view of the Egyptian regime, not saying they are correct or not.

Egyptian army kills Ansar Beit al-Maqdis commander

Sinai-based Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has allegedly killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police over the last year and beheaded several people in recent weeks, saying they were spies for Israeli intelligence.

Egyptian security officials have said Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has contacts with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), a group that the Syrian and Iraqi armies are battling.

They have also highlighted what they say are links between militants in both Libya and Egypt and ISIS, saying Libyan-based Egyptian militants dream of creating an ISIS-style empire in their homeland.

ISIS recently urged Egyptian militants to press ahead with attacks on security forces and beheadings. The call is likely to deepen concern over ties between militant groups in the Arab world's most populous nation.
    http://english.al-akhbar.com/node/21825

This is why I say, if these groups (such as ISIS) want to be taken seriously; they should stop killing their fellow Muslims. They haven't done anything against Israel, they haven't supported the Palestinian resistance against Israel; they are only interested in killing fellow Muslims.

I didn't say that they have sympathies, I made a hypothetical example to see how you see other humans that disagree with local dictators, unfortunately you are too stupid to understand.

Their is no fellow Muslims, when Hazrat Mahdi emerges a lot of Muslims will try killing him and Allah(SWT) will defeat them. If you think this is the state of 'Muslims' then you're lost. Muslims aren't people who support non-Islamic governments, alcohol, belly dancers, corruption, etc... I don't think you know what a Muslim is.

Re: Bomb in Egypt's Sinai kills 25 soldiers

After the deadly Complex Sinai attacks that killed 30 soldiers in the last Friday ,Egypt announced a lot of decisions in the last 2 days :

    - Pushing More Forces into Sinai

    - Closing Rafah Border " For now "

    - Clearing 3Km of the borders with Gaza from inhabitants/buildings/Farms

    - Establishing a 2-3Km buffer zone with Gaza

    - Curfew in north Sinai for 3 months " 5:00 pm to 7:00 am "

    - Activating Military Rules in north Sinai For 3 months

    - informing Israeli/Palestinian sides that next round of Ceasefire negotiations is postponed

    - Cancelling the Ro-Ro Maritime agreement with Turkey that allows turkey to use the Egyptian ports for the delivery of its exports to The Gulf - the decision was published a day after the attack , but it wasn't published as a response to the attack

(Turkey signed this agreement with Egypt in 2012 after Syrian crisis that prevented it from using the usual Syrian ports )
